Visiting with Children

The Cathedral strives to be a family-friendly place.  The presence of children is a gift to the Church.  We encourage parents of young children to relax. God put the wiggle in children, don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. We know the Cathedral is a beautiful and majestic place but we love the energy and vitality of our youngest members.  We find it is best to sit toward the front where it is easier to see and hear. Feel free to quietly explain the parts of the service. Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn about worship by copying you. If you need to get up and move around because your child is restless please feel free to do so, but please come back.  There is a “soft space” near the entrance of the Cathedral which is well equipped with toys and rocking chairs. If you prefer, childcare is available, free of charge, for children ages 4 and under from 8:45 AM until 12 PM. It is staffed by our child care providers and is located very near the sanctuary across from the main office.

Most families attend the 10:30am Eucharist where we provide an age-appropriate children’s
sermon each Sunday. Some families do prefer the quieter 8am service.  Children and youth serve in a variety of worship ministries: ushers, readers, choir members and acolytes. We have a dynamic Sunday School program that meets at 9:15 AM every Sunday.  Our curricula are Godly Play, Living the Good News and J2A.  Our classrooms are on the second floor and they are bright and cheery.  Several adults from the community serve as teachers and youth leaders.

Our ministry to families embodies all aspects of our mission statement: to worship God
joyfully, care deeply and act boldly as followers of Christ. In our interactions with our youngest members, we strive to live out the baptismal covenant and teach our children the tenants of the Christian faith.
