Dear Cathedral Community,

It is with great pleasure that we announce the call of the Rev. Shancia Jarrett to serve as Canon for Formation at the Cathedral. Rev. Shancia received her seminary education from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. She was ordained in the Diocese of Connecticut and that is where she has been serving up to now. See her full bio below.

I express my gratitude and appreciation to the search team: Betsy Huttar, Maryjane Krasnoff, Sr. Mark, John McDonnell, Karen Powell, Lynn Taylor and Tom Thompson. We had several excellent people apply for the position but we are very pleased that Rev. Jarrett has accepted our call. She will begin her time with us on September 1.

May peace be with you,

About The Rev. Shancia Jarrett, Canon for Formation

The Rev. Shancia Jarrett is a first-generation Jamaican immigrant whose family migrated to New York City. She is the daughter of a loving elementary school teacher Coleen Jarrett and a cheerful prosthodontist, George Jarrett. Her parents’ love of education, particularly the sciences, inspired Rev. Jarrett and her four siblings to pursue educational careers in the sciences, business, and public health administration.

She accredits her theological curiosity and calling to her family faith and experiences. From a young age, she was always curious about God and searched for the Divine in the world through nature and social interactions.

In 2014, after completing a Masters in Disability Studies, Rev. Jarrett joined St. Hilda’s House, a Benedictine intentional community of young adults, to better understand her faith and Episcopal formation and to support homeless families. This experience transcended Rev. Jarrett’s faith and vocation. It allowed her to witness the importance of faith communities and society’s deep desire for stability in housing, fellowship, and economics. She believes that liturgy and faith can play a positive role in all forms of communities, regardless of its built demographics. As long as there is a desire and willingness to love and to receive love, there is room for Jesus’ Gospel.

After St. Hilda’s House, Rev. Jarrett enrolled in seminary at Yale Divinity School where she earned a Masters of Divinity, Masters of Sacred Theology, and Diploma of Anglican Studies from Berkeley Divinity School. Rev. Jarrett enjoys the academic topics of medieval theology, youth ministry, biblical studies, environmental awareness and lead abatements, housing disparities, and the economics of racism.

Following seminary, Rev. Jarrett was ordained in the Diocese of Connecticut and has served in a variety of parish settings with diverse theological and political views, and collaborated with government agencies to develop affordable housing reports and economic development initiatives.

Outside of ministry, she loves Zumba, creative arts, the writings of Shakespeare and Catherine Cookson, and the ocean.

Rev. Jarrett is deeply grateful to accept a call to the Cathedral of Incarnation and excited to serve as a priest in the Diocese of Maryland. She looks forward to embracing the Cathedral’s mission of “welcoming all people to worship joyfully, care deeply and act boldly as followers of Christ.”
