Dear Cathedral Community,
This weekend we have the first observance of the Juneteenth Federal Holiday. I am embarrassed to admit that I was unaware of the story of Juneteenth until a few years ago. The movement to recognize June 19th arose during the nationwide protests after the killing of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. The holiday commemorates the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, but enslaved people in Galveston, Texas did not learn of their freedom until several months later on June 19, 1865. I am glad that the U.S. is finally recognizing this important piece of our history but I am also unhappy that it has taken this long to do it. We still have a lot of work to do.
I hope you will join us for worship this Sunday as we celebrate Juneteenth. Remember we have changed to our Summer Schedule – one service at 9:30am.
Peace be with you,
