Week 2: Historical Figures of Courage- St. Kateri Tekakwitha & St. Thea Bowman

Courage requires taking the initiative to face fear and adversity. Leaders require personal courage to set a positive example, confront wrong, change the environment for good, take risks and seek innovative solutions, and ensure all are treated with dignity and respect. This week, we explore courage in the lives American saints.

Historical Figures of Courage:

  • Watch the video on Saint. Kateri Tekakwitha , a Native America saint. She is the patron of the ecology, the environment, and people in exile. You can also research more about Kateri’s life and faith.
  • Review the video on Saint Thea Bowman, an African American saint of the 20th century. She is known for her evangelism, commitment to Christian education, and advocacy against racial injustice.

Questions-What are some examples of Saint Kateri and Saint Thea being courageous?  Do they remind you of any characters from Avatar: The Way of the Water or Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?

As noted in Sister Thea’s video, you don’t have to be leader to make a change, simple acts of kindness in opposition to wrong doing makes a difference and promotes courage. What are some examples of you being courageous? How did you feel and how did you courageous actions impact others?
