Welcome

Who We Are

We are a progressive Christian community seeking to understand, and live into, what it means to be a follower of Jesus in the world today. Our mission is to welcome ALL to worship joyfully, care deeply and act boldly as followers of Christ. We are the Cathedral church of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland.

We are located in the heart of Baltimore just north of the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. We straddle the boundaries of several neighborhoods: Guilford, Tuscany-Canterbury, Waverly, Oakenshaw and Charles Village.

The main Cathedral entrance is at 4 E University Parkway, but our parking lot entrance is at 3601 N Charles St.

We strive to hold one another accountable to community norms and expectations.

What We Believe

The Cathedral of the Incarnation is a Christian community seeking to understand, and live into, what it means to be a follower of Jesus in the world today. Our mission is to welcome all to worship joyfully, care deeply and act boldly as followers of Christ.

Like Christians everywhere, we believe in Jesus Christ, as expressed in the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. We believe in the Holy Scriptures, understood through reason and tradition. We believe that the Sacraments, including Baptism and Holy Communion, are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace. These beliefs are held in common by Episcopalians, but the Church also values intellectual freedom and individual conscience in matters of faith.  READ MORE…

Belonging to the Cathedral Community

All are welcome to participate in the life of this community. If you want to join to our Cathedral Congregation, we ask that you:

• Contact the Office by email office@incarnationbmore.org, or call 410-467-3750 to give us some personal information for our records: full name, contact information, date of birth and date of baptism.

• Attend a newcomer lunch, take part in a newcomer class, or have a meeting with Cathedral Leadership.

• Participate in a welcoming ceremony which takes place during Sunday worship.

• Make an annual financial pledge to support our common mission. We recommend giving a percentage of your income (proportional giving) with the ultimate goal of reaching the tithe (10%).

Our History

Although the first Episcopal Church has been a presence in Maryland since the middle of the seventeenth century, the thought of building a Cathedral for the diocese was not even considered until the beginning of the twentieth. It took several years of floating the idea around, making the rationale widely known and accepted, raising funds, procuring a piece of ground, and forming a core congregation before solid work could begin. Finally, on December 9, 1909, READ MORE…

Children in Church

The Cathedral strives to be a family-friendly place. The presence of children is a gift to the Church. We encourage parents of young children to relax. God put the wiggle in children, don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. We know the Cathedral is a beautiful and majestic place but we love the energy and vitality of our youngest members.

We find it is best to sit toward the front where it is easier to see and hear. Feel free to quietly explain the parts of the service. Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn about worship by copying you. If you need to get up and move around because your child is restless, please feel free to do so, but please come back.

There is “soft space” near the entrance of the Cathedral which is well equipped with toys and books.

Children are welcome at all our worship services READ MORE
