Children’s Worship

Children are a very important part of our community and we try to make our worship as family-friendly as we can. We know the Cathedral is a beautiful and majestic place but we love the energy and vitality of our youngest members. God put the wiggle in children, and we don’t feel it should be suppressed in God’s house.

We encourage families with young children to sit toward the front where it is easier to see and hear. Feel free to quietly explain the parts of the service. Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn about worship by copying you. If you need to get up and move around because your child is restless please feel free to do so, but please come back.  There is a “soft space” near the entrance of the Cathedral which is well equipped with toys and rocking chairs. Childcare is available, free of charge, for children ages 4 and under from 8:45 AM until 12 PM. It is staffed by our child care providers and is located very near the sanctuary across from the main office.

Families are invited to attend the 9:15am Child Centered Eucharist which is celebrated in the Undercroft. There is an open and “wiggle-friendly” atmosphere as well as an age appropriate sermon and interactive music, all in a 40 minute Eucharist service. Different families attend both our 9:15 and 11am services where different opportunities for children engagement is available in the form of the Children’s Sermon during the 11am  service and access to the soft space in the rear of the cathedral which has soft toys and books available for engaging little ones when they get restless. Some families do prefer the quieter 8 AM service.  Children and youth serve in a variety of worship ministries: ushers, readers, choir members and acolytes.
